If you’re job hunting, beware: Online scammers are looking to take advantage of people seeking employment by making phony job offers.
River Town has had several members fall victim to scammers this year, losing thousands of dollars.
TAKE NOTE: Legitimate employers will NEVER ask you to send money to them as terms of your employment.
In most cases, the victim is given a check by their potential employer (or long-distance girlfriend, or sweepstakes company, or craigslist seller), and told to send a portion of the funds back to the employer. They are told to keep a portion of the check for themselves.
Two weeks later, the check is returned as Fraudulent, and the victim is left with a huge negative balance in their bank account that must be repaid.
Fake-check fraud is common and can hit anyone.
Be wary of anyone asking you to transfer funds or cash a check on their behalf.
